The New Aquatic Maternity in Ostend

From the very beginning of my training as an obstetrician, I have quickly realised that the whole happening around "child-birth" was, and often still is, too much medicalised and programmed.

Too often I saw childbirth happen in a violent, nonrelaxed atmosphere, where technical acts dominated the whole process there where it wasn't always necessary. All of this sometimes even lead to further physical and psychological complications for mother and baby!

Therefore, it became very clear to me that more ideal circumstances could and should be created to help women deliver their babies.

These ideal circumstances mainly consist of letting women deliver in a medically safe place, where an intimate, relaxing, non-medical and non-aggressive atmosphere can be created for the mother and for the baby as well.

The use of warm water is often essential trying to realise this. My personal experience of more than 6000 childbirths, 1300 of which I did in the water, has convinced me that a large majority (85%) of all deliveries can take place in the water.

It speaks for itself that women may never be forced into the water, and that a good prenatal preparation, preferably in the water, increases the chances of a successful water-delivery.

If you have just started with this method, you preferably start with multigravid, that had normal previous deliveries and in which case, of course, a normal and spontaneous delivery is expected.

It is very important to be able to detect all the cases where a normal delivery is expected, using all diagnostic systems available these days (labo, ultra sound, X-rays)
