Alaska Maritime WHALE WATCHING

Marine wildlife tour to Seldovia

Come along with us on the M/V DENA'INA or M/V TULCHINA for a narrated wildlife tour of the scenic south shore of outer

Kachemak Bay. Our professionally run tour provides a close-up view of rocky coves and beaches, timbered headlands, pristine islands, seabirds and marine mammals. Highlight of our trip is the Gull Island seabird rookery, summer home of 15,000 seabirds: puffins, cormorants, murres, guillemots, gulls and kittiwakes.

Our well-qualified crew will tell you about the marine mammals of the area: sea otters, sea lions, seals and occasionally whales.

Itinerary

The 4 1-2 hour tour departs Homer twice daily to Gull Island 3 miles from the harbor. Our boat continues south through Eldred Passage past Sadie Cove (the one true fjord in Kachemak Bay) and beautiful Tutka Bay. Along the shores of Cohen, Yukon and Hesketh Islands, sea otters feed in the kelp beds. The richness of these waters has supported prehistoric and historic peoples for over 2,000 years.

Our tour continues to Seldovia, a charming, historic fishing village with ties to the Russian sea otter hunting days of the 1800s and the herring fishery of the 192Os. Here you have 1 ½ hours to stroll along

the Seldovia boardwalk, photograph the Russian Orthodox church, built in 1891, and tour a gift shop and gallery of local artwork.

BRING: Warm clothing, rain gear, binoculars and camera.

Birding trips to the Barren Islands

We run weekly wildlife tours to the Barren Islands during favorable weather mid-June through July. These remote islands are the home of the largest concentration of nesting seabirds in the northern Gulf of Alaska. See rhinoceros and parakeet auklets, puffins, ancient murrelets, sooty and short-tailed shearwaters, northern fulmars, murres, black-legged kittiwakes, fork-tailed storm petrels, black oystercatchers, and cormorants. We frequently see humpback and killer whales (orcas) during these trips.
