Dolphin and porpoise biology

Hundreds of common dolphins skim the sea, making low-angle leaps across the waves, perhaps to reduce drag and build up speed. Displays such as this occur when herds of common dolphins are travelling. The birds overhead are a sign that the dolphins are feeding near the surface. The dolphins' frenetic activity causes the fish to panic and form tight schools, where they become easy targets for the dolphins-and the birds.
