13,000 whale watchers visited the area in 1994. Beside the tours, a comprehensive education programme has been set up, mostly around a visitor's centre with exhibitions about whales and including life-size sperm whales. Future plans include a museum, school programmes, and an even more extensive scientific programme to be handled by the nearby University of Tromsø.
