The Evaluation of Whale-watching in São Miguel, Açores
The evaluation is based on documents dealing with scientific and commercial whale-watching
in Açores. We have also visited the ruined whaling station in the village of
Capelas, São Miguel.
We have made aquintance with Açores in order to get to know other touristic
aspects relevant to Açores, especially those which could be linked to whale-watching.
In conclusion we propose the following:
To upgrade of the ruined whale station into an operative headquarter for a scientific
and a commercial whale-watching.
To start scientific and commercial whale-watching in São Miguel.
To organize the management of the project by the Açores University and
the Ministry of Tourism.
To design license regulation for commercial and scientific whale-watching e.g. "a driving
license".
To initiate the negotiation to link the Açorean whale-watching stations (São Miguel, Pico,
Faial) into South-North Atlantic sperm whale observation network.
To prepare an EU-application for Capelas Açorean whale information centrum.
To start the education of Açorean university students in whale research using
EU-Socrates program.
